Dale Carnegie Institute for Effective Speaking and Human Relations,

Six Ideas for Finding New Sales Leads

Ann Handley

Sometimes in life, you kick over a rock and find a thriving colony of activity. So, too, in business. With so many tools, niches, sites, apps and platforms to look for and nurture customers, it’s easy to overlook less obvious opportunities. Here are some to try.Uncovering New Territories

1. SlideShare

SlideShare.net offers the ability to upload and share presentations, e-books, PDFs and webinars. It isn’t exactly a backwater, but it’s a bit of an undervalued spot. With 60 million visitors per month and 130 million page views, it’s the world’s largest professional content-sharing community and one of the top 200 sites on the web. SlideShare is also one of the only high-traffic platforms that integrates organic and near-seamless lead generation. The network’s LeadShare service requires viewers to fill out a contact form in exchange for downloading a presentation or PDF, and it encourages viewers to contact the business for additional information at various points throughout a presentation. Of course, this feature comes at a price: To enable lead-capture, you’ll have to spring for a Pro SlideShare membership, which can cost $19 to $249 per month.

2. Product videos

Well-produced product videos are a slam-dunk for increasing sales. Visitors to housewares retailer StacksAndStacks.com were 144 percent more likely to make a purchase after seeing a product video, according to analytics technology company Kissmetrics. Keep product videos brief–less than 30 seconds is optimal–and consider embedding calls to action in a way that’s helpful and not irritating. Online catalog aggregator FlipSeek does this effectively; for example, it can make the cute shoes a model is wearing clickable, providing a direct link to the corresponding product page.

3. E-mail signatures

Including a brief, text-based call to action in your e-mail signature may not be the sexiest idea, but considering the volume of e-mail you are likely sending, it’s a tactic worth trying. Consider integrating your blog’s URL, a new e-book or some other relevant download into your e-mail signature as a way to nurture relationships with prospects. Technology like WiseStamp allows you to add dynamic content like your latest blog post to any outgoing message.

4. LinkedIn Answers

Browse the questions asked on LinkedIn and use your expertise to solve problems for others, looking for opportunities to link to your relevant product or service. But, as with most things in life, moderation is key: Don’t shill your own stuff unless it truly offers a relevant solution.

5. Error pages

Turn the most boring pages of your site (even a 404 error page!) into lead-gen opportunities. Mint.com’s playful error page shows a nerdy-looking developer saying, “Page not available. But Justin is.” It goes on: “Justin is a Mint developer who likes slow cars, sharp crayons, reheated pizza and awkward silence.” The page gives links to other Mint.com pages “if you’re more interested in personal finance.”

6. Pinterest

This new kid on the social media block is worth checking out as a traffic-generating lead-gen referral tool. Visits to the invitation-only online bulletin board skyrocketed in the second half of 2011 to 11 million. Brands with compelling boards drive traffic to their own sites. What’s “pinnable” for a business looking to generate leads? Consider moving beyond product shots to include other images, infographics, videos or articles.

Successful Leadership Is Prepared To Deal With Reality

If You’re Not Ready For This Reality You’re Not Ready For Successful Leadership

Posted on by ADail

There are challenges that are unique to small businesses and for successful leadership to happen you need to be alert to them. If you are unaware of them you’ll be unprepared for effectively dealing with the situations as they occur.

Compared to large businesses, small businesses don’t have much power. This inequality in muscle can put leaders of small business at a disadvantage when they contract to provide goods and services to larger organizations or must compete against them for shelf space.

Successful Leadership Is Preparing To Deal With Goliath

Here is one example; bill paying – it is not infrequent that larger companies pay late. Now there are a variety of legitimate reasons why large companies tend to pay late.

Here’s the rub, legitimate or not often small business have no recourse. If they get pushy the larger business will simply find another vendor or subcontractor.

Some small businesses resort to bribes for early bill paying. The general bribe is a discount off of the full price for a product or service rendered.

Simply put, large businesses can and sometimes do exercise a strangle hold over smaller businesses. So successful leadership at the small business levels prepares for this by having a contingency plan that allows them succeed despite the inbalance in power.

A Secret To Securing Successful Leadership In Small Business Retail

Another area of inequality that one must be prepared for to demonstrate successful leadership in a small business is:

Large companies can buy their way on to shelves and literally squeeze smaller businesses out. This is very typical in the retail food industry or other types of household goods.

Sizeable companies easily afford to pay a retailer to accept their product for sales, and then pay additional “fees” get their product placed in the most prominent areas of a store. Can you see what small business can be up against?

Stated in other words it is a battle between the” have’s” and “have nots.” Large retail businesses having deeper pockets can buy advantages; so even if a smaller company may have a better product it may not make it to market because the larger company muscled them out.

What do those who show successful leadership in smaller businesses do? They get bigger by starting smaller.

What do I mean? Here’s what many successful leaders do.

They start at smaller independently owned businesses or chain stores and build popularity there. Then they simply start working their way up the food chain.

That is, as they get larger and larger businesses to accept their product or service; or, they get more businesses to market their product they grow influence and cash reserves. Astute small business leaders then use the power they gained to get into the large retail stores and paying the “fees” necessary for prominent product placement in the store.

Leap into success with these 29 Ways to Win in Business

source

  1. Organizations are never limited by their opportunity; they are limited by their leader. The good news is that you can choose to change.
  2. As a business owner, always be generous. If you are a dentist, all your team members should have great teeth.
  3. Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. This is how you build unity and loyalty.
  4. Love your team well. Treat them like family, and they will act like family.
  5. Most people and organizations fail from a lack of clear goals and focus.
  6. Time is like a fire: It can either destroy us or it can keep us warm. Learn to manage your time well and stop putting off things that make you uncomfortable.
  7. Your business, ideas and team will be paralyzed by an indecisive leader. As the Bible says, “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
  8. Train your team to bring you several possible solutions, not just problems.
  9. Lack of communication will limit you, hold you back and keep you from winning. When in doubt, over-share with your team.
  10. When everyone knows what the goal is, anyone can pick up the ball and run.
  11. Confrontation tastes best when served fresh. Don’t postpone it.
  12. Your yes means yes and your no means no. That’s called integrity.
  13. If you put up with people not doing a job, then people doing the job won’t want to do it.
  14. Put rock stars on your team and treat them like rock stars.
  15. The EntreLeader has a responsibility to make sure that the family they lead is taken care of.
  16. When you do the right things, all benefits come to you.
  17. When hiring for a position, you are looking for the right player, not just talent.
  18. If you wouldn’t hire them again, why are you keeping them?
  19. People will allow themselves to be led by someone who treats them with dignity.
  20. Make all errors on the side of giving too much grace. You’ll never regret it.
  21. Some days, being a leader stinks. But if done right, the good far outweighs the bad.
  22. Micromanagers are control freaks who don’t have the maturity to trust their team.
  23. One way you say “I love you” is with your checkbook. Show your team you care.
  24. Get rich quick doesn’t work. Slow down.
  25. If using God’s financial principles in our personal lives causes us to win because they always work, then using God’s financial principles in our business lives will cause us to win because they always work.
  26. Character is everything in leadership because that’s what people look for and how they decide whether they are going to follow you or not.
  27. Stop being in such a hurry to fill a position. It takes less time to hire one good team member than three different boneheads who don’t work out.
  28. God is inordinately pleased when we are obsessively, compulsively consumed with the needs of others.
  29. Take a lesson from The Tortoise and the Hare. Slow and steady wins the race every time.

Here’s What People Want From You

Successful Leadership Is Honest

When writing a mission statement don’t write something for the primary purpose of coming up with something that just sounds good to investors and stakeholders. It doesn’t rise to successful leadership, here’s why:

  1. You’re spending a lot of time and money on something that is not going to make a difference in your business if you are just writing to impress someone. Is that good business?
  2. It gives employees, clients, and other stakeholders a reason to distrust you. Why? It is because you’re saying your business is built around a statement when in fact it’s not.
  3. It teaches people that going through the motions are enough they really don’t have to be committed. In short it communicates, “It not what you do, but what you say that counts.” This too is not successful leadership.

You Must Say What You Mean

Here’s what this is all about: A mission statement must accurately reflect what you are currently doing or are committing to doing (Cady, Wheeler, DeWolf, & Brodke, 2011). Let that sink in for a moment.

successful leadership, mission statementThe outcome of a mission statement is alignment. You are either describing the current state of alignment leading to a projected future; or, you asserting this is the way you are aligning your organization.

Here are examples of differences in missions:

One set of coffee producers wants the final product to be a very high end coffee.

Another group of coffee producers wants to be the dominating presence in providing an attractive product and atmosphere to buy or consume coffee.

Can you see how the mission statement for each ought to be different? Both care about the customers’ experience, but from a different value point (what they are offer as a unique value).

It all comes down to this, successful leadership means your mission statement is more than words on a wall or a page in a manual. A mission statement must be an accurate description of what your business or organization is, at its essence, about.

Here’s What To Do

Answer this question as you work on your mission statement:

If I asked your members, employees, or clients what your unique value proposition is, what your core competencies are, and why your passionate about them how closely will it match your mission statement?

Can you see that your mission statement should be so endemic to your organization that someone who never read the formal mission statement should come fairly close to describing it if asked? Isn’t it obvious that when the state I described exists it indicates successful leadership?

Stay hungry for excellence,

Alex

How Target Figured Out A Teen Girl Was Pregnant Before Her Father Did

Charles Duhigg outlines in the New York Times how Target tries to hook parents-to-be at that crucial moment before they turn into rampant — and loyal — buyers of all things pastel, plastic, and miniature. He talked to Target statistician Andrew Pole — before Target freaked out and cut off all communications — about the clues to a customer’s impending bundle of joy. Target assigns every customer a Guest ID number, tied to their credit card, name, or email address that becomes a bucket that stores a history of everything they’ve bought and any demographic information Target has collected from them or bought from other sources. Using that, Pole looked at historical buying data for all the ladies who had signed up for Target baby registries in the past. more

4 Ways to Become a Leader People Want to Follow

Tim Peters

We’ve all had bosses we were proud to follow. People we’d do anything for. Even run through brick walls.

On the other hand, most of us have also had bosses we follow only because, well, they’re the boss. So what separates the leaders we want to follow from the leaders we have to follow?

The answer lies in the four Cs of effective leadership. These are all verbs, indicating actions you can take today to become a leader people want to follow:

  1. Care:People follow people who genuinely care about others. It sounds simple, yet this is an area where so many leaders fall short.
    • Take a true interest in the people who work for you.
    • Learn about their hobbies, goals, and dreams.
    • Take time to get to know names of team members’ spouses, kids, and pets.
    • Remember birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates.

    These things make a difference.

Here’s a personal example. I once worked at a place where birthdays were recognized with large gatherings. The entire staff would huddle around the birthday person and pray for their upcoming year. Typically, that person’s boss led the prayer.

As my boss prayed for me on my birthday, he did not say the names of my wife and kids. He did not say them because in two years he never took the time to learn them. I never felt less cared for.

There’s no better way to lose employees than by being indifferent to the things that matter most to them. Great leadership begins with caring about the people you lead. As Margaret Mead once said: “Never believe that a few caring people cannot change the world. For, indeed, that is all who ever have.”

  2. Celebrate:Appreciation is motivation and inspiration. Don’t leave employees in the dark. Show them you appreciate their achievements. Celebrate their successes. This not only lets the individual know you appreciate their work, it encourages all your employees. When a team member exceeds and reaches a goal, go out of your way to celebrate them both publicly and privately. Here are some easy ways to celebrate employees:
    • Send a weekly email to the entire organization recognizing a team member’s success.
    • Take an employee who achieves a goal out to lunch.
    • Thank employees for great work on your company Facebook page.
    • Give an employee a gift card to their favorite cafe.
    • Post blurbs about employee achievements on Twitter.
  3. Correct:Corrective criticism is necessary to be a leader people want to follow. Employees appreciate direction that helps them grow and improve.
    • Don’t just scold employees for doing something wrong.
    • Show them the right way.
    • Put them on the path to success.
    • Take the time to regularly and thoroughly evaluate all your team members.
    • Provide goals and resources for team members to develop their skills.

Remember, the development and success of your employees is a direct result of your leadership. Make this quote from Orlando Battista your mantra or screensaver: “An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.”

  4. Compensate:This one is kind of a no-brainer. Still, many leaders underestimate the importance of compensation to employees. Don’t make that mistake. It’s important. Very important. If you have an excellent team member, see they are compensated fairly. Fight for them if you have to. Employees have more respect for and loyalty to leaders who recognize the value of their hard work and dedication.

Effective leaders are not born. They are built. Ultimately, you control what kind of leader you want to be. Take action to become a leader people want to follow. The results you’ll see from your team will be well worth the effort.

Question: What one action can you take today to become a leader people want to follow?

“I can’t sell” syndrome?

  1. Everyone is selling something.
  2. Selling is a profession characterized by a set of skills and behaviors with a highly quantifiable outcome.
  3. Salespeople who create and keep customers are ones who make sure those customers’ needs are met, over and over again.
  4. Not many parents hope their kids will grow up to be salespeople.
  5. Effective selling is about creating desire in the customer for what we provide or do.
  6. Good selling skills and behavior are based on listening and responding to the customer.
  7. One of the biggest payoffs of effective selling is the opportunity to establish an ongoing relationship with customers.
  8. Selling can be effortless, professional, and done with integrity.
  9. Individuals who develop a “selling-on-purpose” attitude find the sales function to be not only one of the easiest parts of their jobs but often the most pleasurable as well.
  10. No one is a born salesman, and no two salespeople do it the same way.
  11. Even good enough product or service will not sell itself.
  12. In sales, rejection is inevitable, but the pros know how to separate rejection of their product or service from rejection of themselves personally.
  13. Sales professionals give first-class treatment to every customer.
  14. One of the most satisfying aspects of truly effective selling is the beautiful harvest of repeat business and the effortless flow of new business from excellent word of mouth from satisfied customers.
  15. If more data-entry people and receptionists had sales training, they would feel more qualified and empowered to represent their jobs and their companies with pride.
  16. So many workers fall into what called “sales clerk syndrome”. They stock shelves and ring up sales on the cash register, and it never occurs to them that they have any responsibility to interact with real live customers. The difference between a salesperson and a clerk is the ability to overcome objections.
  17. Everybody fights a constant battle to remain motivated. Except, of course, for those who have chosen the whine-and-make-excuses strategy.
  18. Objections can be overcome by unrelenting pressure, facts, statistics, and testimonials – even if it’s not the most effective means for overcoming objections.
  19. Creating an effective selling approach is essential to sales success. Understanding that it’s not always what you say but how you say it is not manipulative.
  20. Customers can only be sold the difference between what they have and what they want

It’s the best way I know to make the selling practically effortless.

ARE YOU WILLING TO GO AFTER YOUR DREAM?

DID YOU KNOW THAT BECAUSE OF THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY PEOPLE WILL NEED TO DRIVE THEIR CURRENT VEHICLE 5-7 YEARS LONGER? DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS ONE THING, THAT REGARDLESS OF THE COST PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BUY?

VEHICLES. FUEL. No matter how you slice it, people have to have them. They are needs, not wants. But how will you keep your vehicle running longer without spending a ton of money on repairs? How will you fight these rising fuel costs?

DID YOU KNOW THAT COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD HAVE PLEDGED TO REDUCE EMISSIONS?

In global councils, countries and governments from all parts of the globe have given their commitment to reduce emissions by upwards of 15% to even 70% by the year 2020. The trick here is that most of them have no idea how they will accomplish it.

Talk about a great opportunity! With these commitments on the line, governments are offering tax advantages and person benefits to companies and individuals who find ways to reduce harmful emissions. XFT reduces emissions by up to 33% with some tests showing even better results. XFT is a simple, effective, immediate answer to this problem. And it actually costs you less to use it, than not to.
